Fever Blisters and the Herpes Simplex Virus

How do you get Herpes?

Herpes Transmission

Unlike some viruses, like the flu virus that can be transmitted through the air you breathe, the herpes virus spreads by direct skin to skin contact. This means that the disease is transmitted when there is contact with the infected area like a cold sore. The virus is also transmitted via sexual intercourse and then causes genital herpes and there is no cure for herpes.

The disease can be spread at other times, not just during cold sore outbreaks. Sometimes it is possible to transmit the disease when there are “prodromal symptoms” present, which manifest when there are itching and tingling sensations on the skin.

Asymptomatic Transmission

Transmission is possible also when there are no symptoms present or between outbreaks. This “asymptomatic transmission” cause people to transmit diseases without them being remotely aware that they have the disease.

Genital Herpes Symptoms

The incubation period of Genital Herpes is about a week. During this period a person infected with the virus could experience the general symptoms such as itching, redness, bump, burning or a tingling in or around the genital area that comes with blisters, sore cuts that are painful and uncomfortable. What is happening when you have an outbreak of the herpes virus?

Cure for Herpes

The virus manifests itself during outbreaks and the best way to know how this virus work is to understand what happens during a herpes outbreak. When you are not having an outbreak, the virus just sits dormant within your body that continues to feed off of your cells but does not completely disappear and there is no cure for herpes.

Some people may never exhibit the symptoms even if the virus is in a very active state and might end up passing on the virus to somebody else before they end up getting treatment.

Why is it that some people go for years without an outbreak and other people seem to have them often? Why is it you can have the virus without ever having an outbreak? To understand the answers to these questions, you need to understand what happens to your body during an outbreak.

Statistics

According to the Center for Disease Control, genital herpes is a very common infection with over 45 million people infected in the United States, beginning from the age of 12 years old onwards. Put into perspective, one out of five people within this age range are infected with Herpes Simplex 2.

The virus is more prevalent in women by a factor of 20% which is probably because transmission from male to female is more effective than the other way around.
45.9% of all infections are carried by blacks while 17.6% of sufferers are white which correlates directly to the overall quality of life experienced by these groups. People living in poverty with little or no access to quality health care and are more exposed to drug abuse are more likely to suffer from the disease.

Ongoing genital herpes statistics research since the late 1970s, indicate the number of Americans with genital herpes infection has increased 30%. The largest increase is currently occurring in young white teens. HSV-2 infection is now five times more common in 12- to 19-year-old whites, and it is twice as common in young adults ages 20 to 29 than it was 20 years ago.
